Inspiration
The history of Photography has cast of characters and unique individuals who saw their world thru a lens, and mastered the Art and Science of film photograhy.
Ansel Adams and Edward Weston taught me to see in Black and White, as well as the science behind it. William Eggleston and Joel Meyerowitz show me how color can be the subject, and to communicate with the color of light. And Henri Cartier-Bresson, how to see and capture the moment.
Just as important...Those photographers who had "film disasters" at the film labs I worked, by giving me starting points to experiment and explore the boundaries and breaking points of analog film.
Techniques
First gaining a firm understanding and proper execution of film sensitometry and the tenets of the zone system photography from the relentless photography instructor, Bill Rauhauser. And applying that knowledge while working in the Black & White darkrooms of Chrysler Photographics in Detroit.
Soon after, working with a range of the top film photographers on the West Coast at A&I Annex and Icon L.A., prior to the digital revolution. During that time, I had mastered the art of "doing bad things to good film". Working outside of the film manufacture’s recommendations on proper exposure and processing of their professional color films.
Just the classic darkroom geek, still missing the golden days of film photography with endless amounts of different (and cheap) film to experiment with.
Career Highlights
While residing in Santa Barbara, CA, I began to work with the Archeologists from Los Padres National Forest, photo-documenting Chumash Rock Art found throughout the region.
In spring of 1997, the James Irvin Foundation awarded me an "Artist in Residency" grant, to continue documenting the remnant traces of the artwork of California's original artists.
I felt honored to be able to document these remaining hidden traces of visions untold, found in-situ in California's original art galleries, located in the mountains and canyons throughout Central California Coastal Range.
